Reviews

Dog eats it, seems to

"Dog eats it, seems to like it. Quite smelly, the lamb product did not have a strong odour. Dog liked the lamb too. Expensive. I use another fast freeze dried raw food too, along with small amounts of Rollover each dinner. Small amounts of each. No kibble used. Good that my dog is small. . she loves her dinner each day."

Excellent result

"My dog has Allergy and GI issues. He was taking Apoquel which didn't help. I started SMACK and a multivitamin. His allergies are all but gone and his GI issues resolved. When my local pet store had SMACK on backorder I tried another like food. It was not good. I how have a backup bag of SMACK so that we don't run into this issue again."

Poor quality

"Specifically started to order directly from smack to prevent the pieces from turning into powder during transportation. Very disappointed to see how much of the bag has been impacted"

Q&A

Hi, we're looking to switch our 6yo JRT off "kibble". Hoping that will keep her healthy and strong forever :) I just came across your food at my local Bosley's and wondering if you can speak to how your food is made such that it retains it's crunch but doesn't carry all the potentially harmful AGEs of kibble. Love your price point, love your fish recipe (we live in BC) and love that you're a Canadian home brand. Just want to better understand if I'm truely avoiding AGEs even with your "low temp" kibble. Thank you so much.
Hi Agata, Great question! Agata, not to worry about AGEs with a product like Smack. We use a low-temperature dehydration process. Smack has a jerky-like texture and can be easily broken by hand. The only thing it would have in common with kibble is the convenience aspects. We never use high heat, which keeps the product as close to its raw form while ensuring all pathogens and harmful bacteria are eliminated. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to reach out to us at customercare@smackpetfood.com.
Is Smack AAFCO approved? I don't see it anywhere on the packaging.
Hi Alissa, thank you for your question. Smack does not disagree with AAFCO recommendations and when it comes to some of the micronutrient values, we do exceed recommendations. When Smack was formulated in 2006 its recipes were formulated with influence from Dr. Ian Billinghurst's (Veterinary Surgeon) "Biologically Appropriate Raw Feeding" diets for dogs. Smack worked with a highly experienced animal agrologist, Serge Boutet, to develop recipes we knew would be healthy, natural, and nutritious for our pets. Our recipes made sure to eliminate anything processed from our pets' foods and shored up on necessary vitamins and minerals through raw bones, organ meat, organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs. When the time comes, Smack meeting AAFCO guidelines will be done in a way that holds true to our founding tenets. We will continue to use natural ingredients from the highest quality sources to do this.
Hello, We’re interested in trying your Salmon recipe for our dog; but we’re concerned about the possibility of flukes with the bacterium Neorickettsia helminthoeca, from passing into the food. Do you provide a guarantee against this; as “Salmon Poisoning” is present on the West Coast, with some raw or under-cooked salmon. Thank you for your time 🙂
Hello Sandra, Thank you so much for reaching out to us and expressing your concerns. All of the fish we use in our recipes, those being Salmon, Rockfish and Herring, are wild-caught (not farm raised) in British Columbia and are not treated with any chemical preservatives. All meats initially go through a lethality phase during the beginning stages of dehydration, as well as the water activity level of our air dried meats are lower than the baseline required to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, parasites and molds. We take extreme pride in the quality of our ingredients and food and as such, we test each and every batch prior to leaving our facility for potential pathogens, bacteria and mold. In 16 years of operations, we have never had a test come back positive, nor have we had a single incident or recall.
Once opened how long does is it fresh for? My dog is only 8 pounds and your bags are really big.
Hi Azita, Smack is very shelf-stable, and has an 18 month shelf-life if it remains unopened, with the original seal. Once opened, as long as it's kept in its original packaging, with the included oxygen absorber, Smack generally stays fresh for up to 3 months after being opened. For storage, we suggest keeping the Smack in a cool, dry place, away from any sources of heat.
Hi im just curious about the high protein can it cause any problems being so high ? I have 3 sheepdogs 13yrs and 2 are 4 yrs old, one with chicken allergies or anything related to feathers. I’ve just started on my second bag and I do add homemade bone beef broth and small amount of cooked bison as a topper, will this cause a problem in increasing the protein even higher ? Also will you be doing a beef food ? The love the food !
Hi Lynn, all our recipes are crafted to promote optimal health in dogs. Adding more meat would increase the protein content. Combining Smack with extra protein will be at your discretion. That said we’d recommend feeding a smaller amount of Smack as well as monitor your dog’s caloric intake. We are planning to create a beef recipe but don't have a definite timeline for when it will be ready. Our end goal is to provide the absolute best for you and your pets. Sourcing our ingredients is something that is very important to us and it also takes quite a bit of time to ensure our formulas are perfected and tested.
